Training horses to drive as willing partners & enjoy driving.
We do not break horses at Horse Haven Uk but rather we train them to become willing partners and to enjoy their driving experience, both during their training and when they leave us and return to their owners to continue the driving work.
We take great pride in our training programmes and we always like to visit horse and owner first in order to assess the horse and ensure he/she will be right for the job as not every horse has the right conformation or temperament for driving.
If we do not believe a horse has the right conformation to drive we will be very honest with the owner and tell them this.
The well being of the horse is our primary concern along with the safety of their owners. We will not take horses that are obviously not suited to the job. If they do not have the right conformation to drive it could potentially cause harm to the horse in the future both physically and mentally. It could also result in an accident. Accidents in carts can be very serious to horse, driver, groom and members of the public.
We always aim to give the right advice as we see it for the good of the horse and the owner.
We will take suitable horses and train them gently to become happy willing partners that will give much pleasure to their owners for years to come and enjoy their work.
WE DO NOT BREAK HORSES BUT TRAIN GENTLY THROUGH PATIENCE, TRUST AND SUPPORT with the primary aim of “Setting Them Up For Success”
Please ensure you get the right trainer for your horse which might mean visiting several before making your decision.
TRAINING HORSES TO DRIVE AT HORSE HAVEN UK
For anyone wishing to have their horse trained to harness and cart we feel we have a unique facility by starting their training safely within the confines of our property on our horse track system and arena. Horses that come to Horse Haven Uk for training are treated the same as our own herd and are given lots of love and care. The training is carried out daily, usually in 3 short daily sessions so that the horse enjoys the experience and does not get bored, we always aim to end on a good note.
Owners are encouraged to visit regularly and participate in the training process. We find this helps the owners confidence when the horse returns home to continue with the driving, it also enables the owner to understand the voice commands which we use to train the horse.
On returning home the horse will have been de-sensitised to as many things as possible and will be confidently and safely driving out on the road amongst traffic.
We always like to assess horses before taking them in as this enables us to get an idea of how long the training process might take. It usually takes between 4-5 weeks.
Horses in our care have access to hay 24/7 but if they require hard feed we ask the owners to provide it in order that their regular routines are maintained.
In our opinion the ideal age to start gentle training for cart is between 4 and 6 years dependent on the breed of horse. We will not take horses for training younger than 4 years.
